Meaningful Use Made Easy

The HITECH (Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health) Act offers government stimulus dollars to eligible physicians who use certified electronic health (EHR) technology. In order to qualify for incentive payments, physicians must demonstrate they are using EHR technology in a meaningful way.

What does Meaningful Use for urgent care mean?

It’s not enough to simply use an EHR in your practice. The goal of the program is to improve the overall quality of healthcare by facilitating the electronic exchange of health information and holding physicians to specific quality measures. The end result is intended to be healthcare that is patient-centered, evidence-based, prevention-oriented, efficient, and equitable.

Why use VelociDoc – the urgent-care-specific EMR? What really happens when an urgent care tries to implement an EMR for “meaningful use”? Usually a lot of extra, meaningless work, slow charting, and a waiting room bulging with unhappy patients.

Every week Practice Velocity gets calls from urgent care physicians who say, “I hate my EMR,” “It takes too long to document every single visit,” “Patients are walking out,” and “I’m staying an extra hour to finish my charts.”

What’s the answer? VelociDoc – the only EMR initially made for urgent care by urgent care professionals. Everything about VelociDoc is designed for “meaningful use” in urgent care.

Our development team worked hard to make sure that every aspect of the implementation of the federal requirements was as “meaningful” as possible to urgent care.

For example, when Practice Velocity designed the clinical decision support feature, the team focused on the most important medical/legal issue in urgent care, namely the missed myocardial infarction. Now when a patient complains of chest pain, the provider instantly (and again on discharge) sees a pop-up that reviews and reminds the provider of the presence or absence of risk factors for myocardial infarction.

The result: VelociDoc users can document urgent care visits in less than three minutes and still attest to meaningful use in their urgent care centers to get credit for the EHR stimulus.

What does this mean for you?
Besides the potential for earning up to $44,000 in stimulus dollars, physicians can experience benefits like:

  • Ability to bring focus back to patient
  • Reduction in errors and lost records
  • Easily available records and data
  • Increased efficiency
  • Improved patient flow
